And then THIS happened. Wood putty, here I come…sigh.

Upside down…and still not giving away any surprise endings. I’ll eventually stop posting these progress shots altogether. I’m going to wait until the piece is near completion to do a mass picture post.

After almost 2 weeks away, I’ve finally come back to my little Saint and her 2 birds. I’ve made alot of mistakes with this layout - mainly because it’s turning into an full relief as opposed to a semi which was my initial intention. I was recently told, “There are no mistakes in carving, just design changes.” It’s true, wood has a mind of it’s own. As do the Saints. As far as they’re concerned, if you’ve decided to devote your time to them, you better devote your entire time…otherwise you’re hands won’t work for anything else. Case in point - our beloved Khaleesi *siigh* It’s not like I don’t know this rule, I’ve experienced repercussions for attempting to break that very rule several times this past year. So yea, that’s the story. More progress pics coming soon!

This is what she’s looking like so far. Slow progress and rough looking progress, but progress nonetheless. I’ve taken to carving a little here and there in the wee hours of the morning before the little one wakes up to begin his day. Other than the birds chirping, it’s super quiet at 6am, which is nice. Just me, a cup of coffee, and a kitchen table full of wood shavings :)

Doing some feathering. I hadn’t planned on doing any…but it’s happening. Carvings tend to take on a life of their own, and with that life comes personality…and opinions. So yea, my Hawk wanted defined feathers, so I was more than kind enough to oblige him.
More progress shots coming sooooooon.

So, here’s what it looks like so far -it’s at about 80% right now. The frame work is yet to be done, as well as the addition of the caption, which is really important to the piece.
I know this piece may seem a bit random to some, but if you sit and look through my body of work, you would notice that the heart is an ongoing theme. This particular piece seems to tie everything together. I’ll get a little deeper into how’s and why’s once I reveal the final product ;) Baby, there’s always a story…

More Progress. Back in the summer, I made a terrible decision to stain this piece, not fully understanding the wood I was working with - bad move. The entire heart had to be sanded down to nothingness :( Heartbroken (literally), I abandoned ship until I was able to think clearly and figure out a way to salvage this beauty.
So today, Friday February 5, 2010 I finally solved the problem. Hoooofuckingraaahhh!

There’s really not much to look at right now, but even having this much completed is very satisfying. I like the process of seeing something take form :) I got 2 more columns and a bit more sanding to go!

It’s looking a hell of alot better, aye? A little bit more back cutting, a little bit of rounding, and a shit load of sanding really goes a long way, lol. I’m just stoked it actually looks like a heart.
I’m hoping new friends over at WCI will give me some tips on how to treat the wood properly. For now I’m debating whether or not I’m going to do my signature style staining to it…hmm, me thinks…

More progression! As you can see, a little back cutting goes a long way. I can’t wait to finish this and oil it up!

(still more waste removal and back cutting to do, but it’s coming along)
