Relaunched the website this morning! Enjoy!
Sea No Evil Art Show 2012
I was waiting until I saw my name on the Artist Roster before I ever mentioned being a part of show (despite working my butt off on my piece for the past 2 months) I’ve really been in disbelief about the whole thing! It’s an amazing opportunity and I really do feel SO blessed :) A huge thank you those of you who have always believed in my artwork. That encouragement keeps my hands moving and progressing. I’m so very happy right now :)
Excitement aside, it’s back to work. I’m shipping my piece out tomorrow, so I have to finish varnishing this frame, and take a few more pics while the lighting outside is still good. I can’t wait to get this thing out of my house already!

Portions of things that are happening in my creative life right now…. :)
Jerusalem Rosary & The Termites Are At It Again, My Love | Images © Copyright 2012 Mel LV Ruiz
My pieces for Revolution Yoga’s Art Show, and an explanation about “Termites”, because I always get asked, why a heart, why call it termites, etc?
I really liked this one verse from Joseph Arthur’s “Termite Song” (I’d post it, but the file is too large for tumblr) Here’s the verse:
“And though I really tried, I never have been good
And for my missing heart, I carve one out of wood
Now I see the termites crawling into me
After they are finished, I wonder where you’ll be”
So yea, if you’re in the neighborhood, swing by and check out the show. It should be pretty sweet!

I finished & framed this piece a few hours before my friend’s drumming ceremony. Of course, that afternoon was cloudy as all hell and I couldnt take proper pics (hence image on the left). The image on the right is the result of a damn good scanning, and has almost the precise coloring of the original piece. Now you can see how way off I was when I retouched the shitty pictures I took that day.
I’m going to run prints soon. Who want’s one?
And then THIS happened. Wood putty, here I come…sigh.

Upside down…and still not giving away any surprise endings. I’ll eventually stop posting these progress shots altogether. I’m going to wait until the piece is near completion to do a mass picture post.

After almost 2 weeks away, I’ve finally come back to my little Saint and her 2 birds. I’ve made alot of mistakes with this layout - mainly because it’s turning into an full relief as opposed to a semi which was my initial intention. I was recently told, “There are no mistakes in carving, just design changes.” It’s true, wood has a mind of it’s own. As do the Saints. As far as they’re concerned, if you’ve decided to devote your time to them, you better devote your entire time…otherwise you’re hands won’t work for anything else.
My sketchbooks…in order.
